General For family research you need apart from the name and approximate dates of life above all the exact place where the requested person was born or lived, because there is no central index of families or names for the territory of our regional church. The marks of origin: Hessen-Kassel, Kurhessen, Nordhessen and so on refer each to an area with hundreds of congregations. For a successful research you need the exact name of a village or town. Identical surnames developed independently in different regions, so you can't infer a relationship because of the same surname. [top]

Tradition of parish registers Most of the parish registers are filmed on microfiches and can be viewed in our archive, so the original parish registers can't be viewed any more (as a conservation measure). Not all parishes are filmed yet, and there are some gaps in some of the filmed parishes, too. Some parish archives including un-filmed parish registers are held as deposits in our archive. Parish registers, like all archival documents, are subject to terms of copyright that are written down in the archival law of EKKW § 10. So the following parish registers are released for use:

Written requests We answer only written requests. For every request we get, we research up to two hours, so we ask you to restrict each of your requests to three or four wanted persons or questions. After the research we send you the results in form of copies of the relevant parish register entries. For genealogical research done by us we take fees. Following our fee schedule we take:
When the research is done, we'll ask you to send us a cheque on the requested amount. After we got this cheque we'll send you the copies. On Eurocheques you don't have to pay chequefees. Because of changed postage regulations we can't use Coupon-Résponses international for postage. [top]
